Chandeliers for the Living Room and Dining Room
A chandelier is a light fixture that does not pretend to be invisible – it takes on the role of the main decoration of the room and defines its center. Therefore, it is chosen differently than a regular ceiling lamp: first according to the scale of the interior, and only then according to the style.
What diameter should a chandelier have?
A simple method: add the length and width of the room in meters, and treat the result as the diameter in centimeters. For a room measuring 4×5 m, this gives a chandelier with a diameter of about 90 cm.
Above the table, the rule is different – the lamp should be about half the width of the tabletop, so it does not extend beyond its outline.
At what height should it be hung?
Above the table, the bottom edge should be 75–85 cm above the tabletop – this way, the light does not dazzle the eyes, and the lamp does not obstruct conversations.
In an open space, where people walk under the chandelier, leave a minimum of 210 cm from the floor to the bottom edge. In a hallway with stairs, a cascading chandelier looks best hung so that it is visible from both levels.
Types of Chandeliers
Crystal chandeliers refract light and create characteristic reflections – they fit into glamour and modern classic interiors. Modular and spherical chandeliers made of metal and glass fit into modern and mid-century modern arrangements. Openwork forms are visually light despite their large diameter.
Chandeliers and Other Lighting
A chandelier rarely suffices on its own – it provides general light but does not illuminate zones. It is worth combining it with wall sconces, a floor lamp by the sofa, and a table lamp on the dresser.
A practical tip: with such a striking lamp, it is worth installing a dimmer – full brightness is useful for cleaning, while in the evening, a fraction is enough. You can find other models among hanging lamps and in the lamp collection.
