Rugs for the Living Room, Bedroom, and Dining Room
A rug does more in a space than meets the eye – it ties furniture together into one zone, softens the room, and warms the floor. Often, it’s the absence of a rug that makes a living room feel unfinished, even with a complete set of furniture.
At Eye on Design, you’ll find designer rugs in various sizes, shapes, and materials – be sure to check out our living room rugs, as well as options for the bedroom, dining room, hallway, and terrace.
How to Choose the Right Size Rug?
This is the most common mistake when buying – a rug that is too small makes the space look random. In the living room, the rug should at least reach under the front legs of the sofa, and ideally encompass the entire seating area along with the armchair and coffee table.
In the dining room, the rule is different: the rug must be large enough so that when the chairs are pulled out, their back legs still remain on the rug. It’s recommended to have about 60–75 cm of extra space on each side of the table.
Rug for the Bedroom
In the bedroom, it matters where you place your feet upon waking. A large rug extending 60–80 cm from three sides of the bed works best. Alternatively, two smaller rugs on either side of the bed can be a more budget-friendly solution for larger beds.
Shape and Material
Round rugs break the geometry of the room and look great under a round table, in the hallway, or in a corner with an armchair. Rectangular rugs work better with long sofas and sectionals.
Wool rugs are soft, durable, and naturally stain-resistant, making them ideal for the living room and bedroom. For the dining room and hallway, a short, tight weave is preferable – it’s easier to vacuum. For the terrace and balcony, choose outdoor rugs that are resistant to moisture and sunlight.
Rug and the Rest of the Interior
A rug is a large area of color, so it’s worth coordinating it with the upholstery of your furniture. If the sofa is patterned, choose a subdued rug – and vice versa. It’s a good idea to repeat the rug's color in cushions or a throw to create a cohesive look.
Rugs can easily be matched to the style of the interior: boho, Scandinavian, Japandi, or glamour. Learn more about layering in our article Layers in the Interior – The Secret to the Warehouse Effect. You can find the full range of fabrics in our textiles collection.
Rugs – Frequently Asked Questions
What size rug for the living room?
One that accommodates at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs. The rug should define the relaxation area, not sit alone in the middle of the floor. You can find tried-and-true models in our living room rugs collection.
What rug under the table?
Larger than the table by about 60–75 cm on each side – this way, the pulled-out chairs still sit on the rug and don’t catch on its edge.
What rug for the bedroom?
Ideally soft, extending 60–80 cm from the bed on three sides. Two smaller rugs placed on either side of the bed also work well.
Can a rug be placed in the hallway?
Yes, but choose a short, tight weave and a darker color – it’s easier to clean and less visible dirt.
