A blank wall makes even a well-furnished interior feel incomplete. A poster or piece of art is the quickest way to change that – and the most reversible, as you can swap out the artwork in just a few minutes.
What Size to Choose?
Above a piece of furniture, the artwork or entire composition should be about two-thirds of its width. Above a sofa that is 220 cm wide, this means an artwork or arrangement with a total width of about 150 cm.
The most common mistake is choosing a size that is too small – a single A4 poster above a large sofa looks random. It’s better to opt for one large piece than several small ones scattered across the wall.
At What Height to Hang?
The museum standard: the center of the artwork should be at eye level, around 150–160 cm above the floor. Above a piece of furniture, a gap of 20–30 cm from the top or back is sufficient – this way, the artwork and the furniture read as a cohesive whole.
In the dining room, where you mainly look at the walls while seated, you can hang it a bit lower.
Gallery Wall Step by Step
Before you start drilling, lay out the entire composition on the floor – this saves unnecessary holes. Leave 5–10 cm between frames; larger gaps break the arrangement into separate elements.
The composition looks cohesive when it has one common feature: identical frames with different artworks or different frames within one color palette. It’s also worth aligning the arrangement to one line – top, bottom, or middle.
Where to Hang
In the living room, a natural place is the wall behind the sofa or above a chest of drawers; in the bedroom – above the bed, and in the hallway – the wall visible immediately upon entry.
Artworks pair well with a mirror, a wall clock, and wall decorations. A whole wall can be transformed by wallpapers or a mural. It’s also worth illuminating the composition with wall sconces.
