The base is responsible for two things: stability and proportions. It determines whether the lamp stands firmly and whether the shade looks well-integrated – that’s why in a modular system, it is chosen together with the shade, not separately.
Proportion of Base to Shade
A proven rule: the shade should be approximately twice as wide as the widest point of the base, and its height should be about one-third of the entire lamp. The bottom edge of the shade should cover the socket and bulb – a visible light source can be blinding.
Material and Stability
Ceramics and stone are heavy, so they can support even a large shade – a good choice for floor lamps and in areas where children or pets are present. Metal offers a sleek form while maintaining weight in the base. Wood is visually lighter and warm to the touch, fitting well in Scandinavian and Japandi interiors.
When it comes to floor lamps, pay attention to the diameter of the base – if it’s too small for a tall structure, it poses a risk of tipping over.
Cable and Switch
This detail determines daily convenience. A switch on the cord is more accessible than one on the fixture, especially with a lamp on a nightstand. Also, check the length of the cable – for a lamp standing in a corner, 1.5 m is often insufficient.
How to Combine
The same base with different shades allows for consistency across several rooms. Conversely, one shade design on different bases connects a table lamp in the bedroom with a floor lamp in the living room.
