A headboard is an element that significantly influences the character of the bedroom – it occupies a large area at eye level and defines the center of the room. It also serves a practical function: it protects the wall and provides support while reading.
What Width and Height?
The headboard should be at least as wide as the bed, and it often looks better if it is 10–20 cm wider on each side – this visually enlarges the furniture. For a 160 cm bed, this means a model of 160–200 cm.
The height depends on the proportions of the room. Standard models reach 100–120 cm from the floor, and in bedrooms with high ceilings, panels of 140 cm and higher look great, emphasizing the verticality of the wall.
Bed Headboard or Wall Panel?
A headboard that is part of the bed is easier to install and moves with the furniture. A wall panel is mounted separately but offers greater freedom – it can be made wider than the bed and can also encompass nightstands.
Tufting and Fabric
Diamond tufting gives a classic and representative effect, while vertical panels create a modern and calm look. A smooth, soft form fits best in Scandinavian and Japandi interiors.
Since you lean your back and head against the headboard, it’s worth choosing a fabric that is pleasant to the touch and easy to vacuum. Velvet and bouclé are soft but require regular cleaning.
Lighting by the Headboard
A tall headboard often interferes with wall sconces – it’s a good idea to plan their height together with the furniture so that the light falls above, not behind the backrest. An alternative is table lamps on the nightstands. Complete the look with bedding and a bedspread.
