Since you can spend several hours a day at your desk, a office chair is one of the few pieces of furniture where ergonomics matter more than appearance. A well-chosen chair relieves the lumbar region and allows you to work without back pain.
How to Adjust the Height?
Start with the chair, not the desk. Adjust the seat so that your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. For a desk with a standard height of 74–76 cm, this usually means a seat height of 42–48 cm.
If the desktop is too high after adjusting your legs, a footrest will be necessary – it's a cheaper solution than replacing the desk.
What to Pay Attention To
Lumbar support is the most important element – the curve of the backrest should fit the natural curve of your spine. Seat depth is appropriate when there is enough space for your hand between the edge and the bend of your knees. Armrests should allow your shoulders to relax and enable the chair to slide under the desk.
Office Chair in a Home Interior
In a home office, it's worth choosing a model with a subdued design – upholstered, on a wooden or black base – that doesn't look like corporate equipment. For short tasks, swivel chairs without extensive adjustments will also work well.
The setup can be complemented with a desk lamp placed to the side, a shelf above the desk, and document holders. For longer relaxation, a recliner next to the workspace will be perfect.
