Garden and Patio Furniture
A patio works best when it is designed like another room, not as a storage space for chairs. Dividing the area into a dining zone and a relaxation zone works just as well as it does indoors – you just need to choose the right furniture and materials.
Material and Weather Resistance
Technical materials, such as polypropylene with fiberglass, are the easiest to maintain – they do not require treatment, do not fade in the sun, and can simply be washed with water. Technorattan is moisture-resistant, but cheaper versions may become brittle after a few seasons.
Teak wood ages beautifully – it turns gray over time – but it requires oiling if you want to maintain its color. Metal is stable and durable, but it heats up in direct sunlight.
Dining Zone
The foundation consists of garden tables and garden chairs. The same proportions apply as in the home: about 60 cm of tabletop width per person and 80–100 cm of free space around the table.
For a high tabletop and garden bar, garden stools are ideal. Stacking and folding models are easier to store off-season.
Relaxation Zone
This area is dominated by garden armchairs, garden sofas, and loungers. Just like in the living room, it’s worth pairing them with a low table and an outdoor rug that ties the furniture together into one zone.
Shade at noon can be provided by umbrellas – for a table seating six, a model with a diameter of at least 3 m is needed to shade those sitting at the edges.
Light and Greenery
Evenings on the patio are extended by outdoor lamps and portable battery lamps, which can be placed directly on the table. For greenery, choose planters – on balconies and patios, opt for frost-resistant models, as regular ceramics can crack in winter.
Garden Furniture – Frequently Asked Questions
Which garden furniture requires the least maintenance?
Those made from technical materials – they do not need oiling or treatment, just water with a mild detergent.
Can furniture be left outside in winter?
Most will survive, but you will preserve their appearance longer by storing them under a roof. Always store cushions and fabrics.
What umbrella is suitable for a table for 6 people?
One with a diameter of at least 3 m – smaller ones do not shade those sitting at the edges of the tabletop.
