For a kitchen island with a height of 90–95 cm, you will need bar stools with a seat height of about 65 cm, and for a bar height of 105–110 cm, a seat height of 75–80 cm. The rule is consistent: leave 25–30 cm for legroom between the seat and the underside of the countertop.
Plan for about 60 cm of countertop width per person. Also, check the countertop overhang – without a 25–30 cm extension, knees will bump against the cabinetry.
Dining Area
If the kitchen connects to the dining area, you will need a table – 120–140 cm for four people, 160–180 cm for six – and chairs with a seat height of 45–47 cm. A bench that can be tucked under the countertop will save space against the wall.
Task Lighting
In the kitchen, the light should shine on the countertop, not on the back of the person cooking – this is the most common mistake. A row of pendant lights looks great above the island, suspended 80–90 cm above the countertop, while general lighting can be provided by a ceiling lamp or flush mount.
For the work area, choose a neutral color temperature of around 4000 K – it helps in assessing the colors of the products.
Dinnerware and Accessories
Keep only what you use daily on the countertop. The rest can be organized in containers for dry goods and shelves. A well-chosen dinnerware set will add coherence: plates, cups, glasses, and cutlery.
