Arc lamps feature a curved arm that allows you to hang the shade over a sofa or table without interfering with the ceiling – a great solution for renters or where the light point is in an inconvenient location.

Where to Place a Floor Lamp
The most common spot is the corner of a sofa or next to an armchair – the lamp creates a reading nook and allows you to forgo overhead lighting in the evening. It also works well behind a sectional, where it illuminates the wall and visually deepens the room.
In the bedroom, a slender standing lamp replaces a bedside lamp and frees up space on the nightstand, while in the office, it complements the light at the desk.
How to Choose Height and Light
For a reading lamp, the shade should be approximately at the height of a seated person's arm – this way, the light shines on the book, not in their eyes. Lamps with shades directed upwards provide reflected light from the ceiling, which is softer and better for general illumination.
For the living room and bedroom, choose a warm light color (2700–3000 K), and if the lamp is for work, opt for a neutral color. It's worth checking if the model has a dimmer: the ability to adjust brightness significantly enhances evening comfort.
Layered Lighting in the Living Room
A floor lamp works best as one of several layers of light. Combine it with a ceiling lamp for general lighting, wall sconces along the wall, and a table lamp on a sideboard. A hanging lamp works well above the table.
