Seating is chosen based on one principle: what it is used for. A different piece of furniture works well at a table where you sit upright for an hour, and another in a relaxation area where you spend the evening with a book.
For the Dining Room and at the Table
Chairs for a table that is 75 cm high should have a seat height of 45–47 cm, with 25–30 cm of legroom under the tabletop. Allow about 60 cm of width per person at the table.
Instead of chairs, a bench works well against the wall – it accommodates more people and can be tucked under the tabletop. For a kitchen island, bar stools are needed, with a seat height of about 65 cm for a 90 cm high countertop.
For Relaxation
Armchairs for relaxation have deeper seats and a more reclined backrest than chairs. They work best positioned at an angle to a sofa – creating a conversation area. For longer relaxation with your feet up, chaise lounges and ottomans are ideal.
For Work
At a desk, ergonomics matter: feet flat on the floor, knees bent at a right angle, lumbar support fitting the natural curve of the spine. You can find adjustable models among office chairs.
Material and Maintenance
Upholstery is more comfortable for longer sitting, but in the dining area, wooden chairs or seats that are easy to wipe down are often more practical. Rattan models bring a natural texture.
Consistency in Open Spaces
When the kitchen connects with the dining room and living room, the seats do not have to be identical. Just one common element – the color of the base, the material of the seat, or the finish of the metal – is enough for the whole to read as cohesive.
