Scented Candles and Diffusers
Fragrance is the only element of decor that is invisible yet instantly transforms the perception of a space. A well-chosen scented candle acts as the final layer of arrangement – much like a throw or cushions, but in a more subtle way.
The First Burn Sets the Tone
On your first use, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface of the wax has melted – usually 2–3 hours. Wax has memory: if you extinguish the candle too early, it will only melt in the center during subsequent burns, creating a tunnel that wastes most of the wax.
Trim the wick to about 5 mm before each lighting – a longer wick produces soot and scorches the edges of the container.
How to Choose a Scent for Each Room
In the living room, woody, spicy, and resinous notes work well – they are warm and not overwhelming for extended stays. In the bedroom, gentle lavender and musk compositions are preferable, as strong scents can hinder sleep.
In the kitchen, opt for citrus and herb scents that neutralize cooking odors, while in the bathroom, choose fresh, marine, or eucalyptus fragrances.
Candle or Diffuser?
A candle provides both scent and light but requires your presence in the room. A reed diffuser works continuously and is safe – making it a better choice for hallways and bathrooms where no one is monitoring the flame.
The intensity of the diffuser can be adjusted by the number of reeds: fewer in a small room, more in a large one.
