Pots and Plant Covers
A pot determines two things at once: how the plant looks and how it grows. A pot that is too tight hinders root development, while one that is too large encourages overwatering – and the material and presence of drainage holes affect how quickly the soil dries out.
What size pot should you choose?
When repotting, choose a pot with a diameter that is 2–4 cm larger than the previous one – a larger jump can retain excess soil moisture for too long, leading to root rot. Plants with shallow root systems, like succulents, prefer wider rather than deeper containers.
Pot or cover?
A pot has drainage holes and sits on a saucer. A cover is solid and serves as a decorative element – the plant is placed inside it in a plastic container. This is a more convenient solution: after watering, simply pour out the excess water from the bottom.
If you choose a solid cover without an insert, add a layer of expanded clay at the bottom – this will prevent the roots from sitting in water.
Material and watering
Ceramics and terracotta are porous, so the soil dries out faster – this is a good choice for plants that do not tolerate moisture. Glass, metal, and concrete retain water longer. Additionally, concrete is quite heavy, which is an advantage for tall plants, but makes moving them more difficult.
Where to place plants
In the living room, large floor pots fill an empty corner next to a chair nicely, while smaller ones can be placed on a dresser and floating shelves. In the hallway, narrow models work well without narrowing the passage.
For the terrace and balcony, choose frost-resistant containers from the outdoor collection. Complete the composition with vases and other decorations.
