Desks for Home and Office
A desk at home must balance two things: work comfort and the fact that it is in a living space. That's why in this collection, you'll find models with a design that is subtle enough not to look like an office piece placed in the living room or bedroom.
What Size Desk to Choose?
For working on a laptop, a surface of about 100–120 cm in width is sufficient. If you use a monitor and documents, it's more comfortable to work with 140–160 cm, and for two monitors, 160 cm and more is ideal.
The depth of the surface is usually 60–80 cm. Less than 60 cm means the monitor is too close to your eyes, while a depth greater than 80 cm makes it harder to reach the back of the desk.
Height and Ergonomics
The standard desk height is about 74–76 cm. With the correct posture, your forearms should rest on the surface roughly parallel to the floor, and your feet should be flat on the ground. If the surface is too high, it's easier to adjust a desk chair with height adjustment than to replace the furniture.
Also, check the space under the surface – a drawer placed too low can block your knees.
Desk in the Living Room and Bedroom
In a small apartment, a desk often serves a dual purpose. A narrow model with a depth of 40–45 cm can function as a console – against the wall, with a lamp and decoration – and you can simply add a chair for work.
In the bedroom, a desk often replaces a vanity; in this case, it's worth ensuring you have a mirror and even lighting. You can find a complete arrangement for your workspace in the Office and Study collection.
Lighting and Storage
Light should come from the side, not from behind – this way, it won't reflect on the screen. A table lamp with an adjustable arm or a floor lamp placed next to the desk will work well.
Documents and accessories are best stored in shelves, dressers, or containers, and you can hang a shelf above the desk. You can find more surfaces in the tables and desks category.
Desks – Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard height of a desk?
About 74–76 cm. At this height, most people work comfortably, provided the chair has height adjustment.
What desk is suitable for a small room?
A narrow model with a depth of 40–50 cm or a desk that functions as a console. Slim legs also reveal more of the floor.
Where should I place the desk in relation to the window?
It's best to position it sideways to the window – this way, the light comes from the side and doesn't reflect on the screen or cause glare.
