Chairs for Dining Rooms, Kitchens, and Living Rooms
Chairs are usually purchased in sets and used daily – so not only their appearance matters, but also comfort for longer sitting and ease of cleaning. At Eye on Design, you will find designer chairs in a variety of upholstery options, colors, and bases.
Types of Chairs
Upholstered chairs are the most comfortable for longer meals and conversations, while wooden chairs are easier to keep clean and fit well in natural interiors.
Armchairs provide better support but take up more space – check if they will fit under the table. Swivel chairs make getting up easier and are great for desks, while rattan chairs bring a natural, light texture.
How to Choose Chairs for Your Table?
A standard table is about 75 cm high, and a matching chair should have a seat height of 45–47 cm. There should be about 25–30 cm of legroom between the seat and the underside of the tabletop.
When planning the number of chairs, count about 60 cm of width per person. If the table is set close to a wall, a bench that can be tucked under the tabletop is a better option than two chairs.
Chairs in the Kitchen and at the Island
For a kitchen island and high countertop, you need bar stools, not classic chairs – for a 90 cm countertop, a seat height of about 65 cm works, and for 110 cm, about 75 cm. In the kitchen, it's also worth opting for fabrics that are easy to clean or seats made of plastic.
Colors and Fabrics
The most versatile are black chairs, which easily match any tabletop, and white chairs, which visually brighten the space. Beiges and grays are safe choices, while bolder colors can serve as accents when the rest of the dining area is muted.
In homes with children, fabrics with a tight weave, faux leather, or easily washable seats will be more practical.
Chairs and the Rest of the Decor
Chairs do not have to match the rest of the furniture – often, a combination of a wooden table with upholstered chairs looks better. However, it’s worth repeating the color of the base in another element, such as in a hanging lamp above the table.
You can find the entire decor collection in the Dining Room collection, and other seating options in the armchairs and chairs category – including armchairs and office chairs for the office.
Chairs – Frequently Asked Questions
What is the height of a chair for a 75 cm table?
The seat should be about 45–47 cm high. There should be 25–30 cm of space between the seat and the tabletop.
How many chairs fit at the table?
Count about 60 cm of tabletop width per person. At a 160 cm table, six people can sit comfortably, including the ends.
Do chairs have to match the table?
They do not have to be from the same set. Proportions, seat height, and repeating one common element – color, material, or finish of the base – are more important.
What chairs are suitable for a small dining room?
Lightweight models without armrests that can be fully tucked under the tabletop. Slim legs also reveal the floor and do not overwhelm the space.
