Benches for the Hallway and Dining Room
A bench solves two problems at once: it provides a seating area where a chair won't fit, and – in the version with storage – it takes on part of the storage needs. In the hallway, it is often the only piece of furniture where one can sit while putting on shoes.
Bench in the Hallway
The comfortable seat height is 45–50 cm – if it's lower, it's hard to get up, and if it's higher, feet may not reach the floor securely. A depth of 35–40 cm is sufficient and does not narrow the corridor.
Models with storage or a shelf under the seat can hold shoes used daily. The entire entry area can be complemented with a coat rack, a mirror, and a console or a narrow chest of drawers.
Bench at the Table
In the dining room, a bench allows for more people to be seated than chairs – there is no strict division of seats, so a three-person bench can accommodate a fourth person if needed.
It is chosen in the same way as chairs: a seat height of 45–47 cm with a table height of 75 cm. The bench can also be tucked under the tabletop, which is a real advantage in a small kitchen.
A mixed arrangement often works best: a bench against the wall and chairs on the other side of the table.
Bench in the Bedroom
In the bedroom, a bench stands at the foot of the bed – it serves as a seat for dressing and for placing bedspreads at night. A similar function is served by ottomans, but for one person.
Material and Maintenance
In the hallway, wood, metal, or leather seats are more practical – they can be easily wiped down after rain. Upholstered models work better in the dining room and bedroom; it's worth choosing a fabric with a tight weave.
