Dining Tables – Extendable, Round, and Wooden
The table is the piece of furniture where we spend the most time together – daily meals, work, homework, and gatherings with guests. Therefore, when choosing, not only the appearance matters, but also the dimensions, the shape of the top, and the possibility of expansion.
At Eye on Design, you will find dining tables for the dining room, kitchen, and living room – from compact models for two to large family tables.
What size table should you choose?
It is generally accepted that one person needs about 60 cm of tabletop width. A table for four people is usually 120–140 cm long, for six – 160–180 cm, and for eight – 200 cm or more.
Equally important is the space around: it’s advisable to leave about 80–100 cm from the edge of the tabletop to the wall or another piece of furniture, so you can easily pull out a chair and pass behind the person sitting.
Extendable Tables
If there are usually two or three of you, but a few times a year you host a larger group, the best solution is an extendable table. It takes up less space on a daily basis, and when extended, it accommodates several additional guests.
Especially convenient are extendable round tables – they combine the advantages of both solutions. Check the extension mechanism: some models have an insert hidden in the tabletop, while others require separate storage.
Round or Rectangular?
A round table has no sharp corners, facilitates conversation among all seated, and works well in smaller and square rooms. A rectangular table makes better use of space against a wall and is easier to fit into a narrow dining area.
Pay attention to the base as well: a central leg offers more freedom for seated legs, while classic four legs provide greater stability for larger tops.
Tabletop Material
Wooden tables have a warm feel and fit well in Scandinavian and Japandi interiors. Glass tables are visually light and create an illusion of more space, while stone and ceramic tops are resistant to scratches and high temperatures.
For the terrace and garden, choose garden tables made from materials resistant to moisture and UV radiation.
What to Pair with the Table
The foundation is chairs – it’s worth checking if the seat height allows for comfortable leg placement under the tabletop. Instead of chairs against the wall, a bench works well, and for a kitchen island – bar stools.
Hang a pendant lamp above the table, and store dishes and tableware in a display cabinet or sideboard. You can find the entire arrangement in the Dining Room collection, and other tabletops in the tables and desks category.
Tables – Frequently Asked Questions
What table for 6 people?
Usually 160–180 cm long for a rectangular top or a round table with a diameter of about 130–140 cm.
How much space to leave around the table?
About 80–100 cm from the edge of the tabletop to the wall or furniture – this is enough to pull out a chair and pass comfortably.
What table for a small kitchen?
Best to choose a round or extendable table – the lack of corners makes movement easier, and the ability to expand is useful when guests are over.
At what height should I hang a lamp above the table?
So that the bottom edge of the shade is above the eye level of seated individuals – this way, the light does not glare in their eyes and does not obstruct conversation.
