What Depth Should a Wardrobe Have?
To hang clothes on a rod, you need a minimum of 55–60 cm in depth – that's how much space a hanger takes when positioned parallel to the front. For shallower wardrobes, a pull-out cross rod is necessary, where clothes hang sideways and fit significantly less.
Wardrobes with a depth of 35–45 cm are suitable for folded items and in the hallway, where every centimeter of passage counts.
Sliding or Hinged Doors?
Sliding doors do not require space in front of the wardrobe, making them ideal for narrow bedrooms and where a bed is positioned opposite. The downside is that you can only see half of the interior at any time.
Hinged doors provide full visibility and utilize the entire depth, but require 60–70 cm of free space in front. Before purchasing, check that the open door won't block the passage.
Interior Division
A well-planned wardrobe has three zones: the bottom for shoes and containers, the middle for the rod, and the top for seasonal items. For shirts, 100 cm of height under the rod is sufficient, while for dresses and coats, you need 150–180 cm.
Order on the shelves can be maintained with containers and baskets, and folded items are often more conveniently stored in a chest of drawers than on high shelves.
Wardrobe in the Hallway
In the hallway, there is usually a lack of depth, so a set often works better: a shallow wardrobe or shelf with fronts, a coat rack for daily use, and a bench with space for shoes.
It's worth adding some lighting to the interior – even a simple wall fixture next to the wardrobe makes it easier to put together an outfit in the morning, especially when the room lacks a window.
