Nightstands – Wall-Mounted, Narrow, and with Drawers
A nightstand is a piece of furniture you use every day, often in the dark – so height, reach, and storage capacity matter. At Eye on Design, you'll find nightstands and side tables in various forms: standing, wall-mounted, with drawers, and open designs.
What height should a nightstand be?
The most comfortable height is when the top of the nightstand is roughly at mattress level or a few centimeters higher – this way, you can easily reach for your phone, a book, or a glass of water without sitting up. For high continental beds, a taller nightstand is necessary compared to low, upholstered ones.
It's also important to choose the width according to the scale of the bed: with a 160 cm bed or wider, two narrow nightstands can often look too small.
Wall-Mounted or Standing?
A wall-mounted nightstand visually lightens the bedroom and makes vacuuming easier – it's a great solution for smaller spaces. However, it requires wall mounting and prior height determination.
A standing model doesn't require drilling, is easy to move, and usually offers more storage space. An interesting alternative is using side tables as nightstands – they create a more relaxed effect.
Drawers or Open Shelves?
A drawer can hide small items, cables, and medications, while an open shelf is perfect for books and albums. If space is limited in the bedroom, choose a model with a drawer – this keeps the top surface clear, visually calming the space.
Lighting by the Bed
The simplest way to free up the top surface is to install wall sconces on either side of the bed – downward-facing light makes reading easier and won't disturb your partner. Alternatives include table lamps or a slim floor lamp placed next to the nightstand.
Coherent Bedroom Design
It's worth choosing nightstands that complement your dresser and other furniture – they don't have to be from the same set, just repeating the wood color, handles, or leg finishes is enough. Complete the look with bedding, a bedspread, and a rug.

Nightstands – Frequently Asked Questions
What height should a nightstand be?
The most comfortable height is at mattress level or a few centimeters higher – this way, you can reach for items without getting out of bed.
Do nightstands have to be two?
No – in a narrow bedroom, one nightstand and a wall sconce on the other side of the bed often work better.
What can be used instead of a nightstand?
A side table, a low stool, or a narrow console. It's important that the top surface is within reach of the person lying down.
