Pendant Lamps for Dining Tables and Living Rooms
A pendant lamp differs from a ceiling lamp in one key way: it defines a specific area. Suspended above a table, kitchen island, or coffee table, it indicates the center of the room – and that's why it has such a strong impact on the perception of the entire space.
At Eye on Design, you'll find over fifteen hundred pendant lamps: single shades, modular arrangements, and stunning chandeliers.
What Height Should a Lamp Be Hung Above a Table?
This is the most common question and the most frequent mistake. The rule is: the bottom edge of the shade should be about 75–85 cm above the tabletop. This way, the light won't glare in your eyes, and the lamp won't obstruct the view of people sitting across from each other.
For a kitchen island, where people stand more often than sit, it's best to hang the lamp a bit higher – about 80–90 cm above the countertop.
What Diameter and How Many Lamps?
Above a rectangular table, two or three smaller lamps hung at equal intervals look great, while above a round table, one larger lamp with a diameter of about half the table's diameter is ideal.
When arranging several lamps, maintain a distance of about 60–75 cm between them and avoid extending beyond the outline of the table – the lamps should "sit" above the table, not beside it.
Where Else Can a Pendant Lamp Be Used?
In the dining room above the table, in the kitchen above the island, in the living room above a coffee table, or in a corner by an armchair.
In the bedroom, two small lamps hung on either side of the bed can replace bedside lamps and free up the surface of the nightstand – just like wall sconces. Cascading compositions look stunning above staircases and in hallways.
Shade Material and Light
Glass shades – especially transparent and smoky ones – diffuse light widely and look beautiful even when turned off. Metal shades direct the light downwards, providing better illumination for the surface but leaving the ceiling in shadow.
Fabric and rattan create soft, warm light, which fits well in boho and Scandinavian interiors. Black and metal emphasize an industrial character, while brass and gold highlight glamour.
Layered Lighting
A pendant lamp rarely suffices on its own. Complement it with a ceiling lamp for general lighting, a floor lamp in the relaxation area, and a table lamp on the dresser. You can find the full range in the lamp collection.
